Unfortunately the Phog Blog is not really in line with the New York Times, except when talking about the sports section. Then it rivals the NYT in college basketball coverage. The NYT’s goal however is not to go into scrupulous detail about the inner workings of the Big Twelve conference. That’s what media outlets like the Phog Blog are for!
This shows a perfect example of Jeff Jarvis’s idea of the fluid ‘Press Sphere”. The NYT does report on college basketball but not extremely specific because face it, there are just too many teams and conferences to do everything justice. This is where things like the Phog Blog and entities like it begin to taking basic information put out by big sources like the NYT and crafting it to a specific audience where it can spread more easily. Then once it spreads, the stories can grow and smaller sources receive instant feedback for them to produce another story. In turn the new, possibly bigger and better, story is hopefully picked back up by a major news source and re distributed to the masses.
